A salary is a subscription you sell

6 July 2026 · 4 min read · by Arslan Munir

A salary feels like safety. It is actually a subscription — and you're not the customer. You're the product being subscribed to.

One buyer. Auto-renewing monthly. Cancellable by them, with notice, at any time. If a startup had that revenue model — a single customer, total concentration risk — you'd call it fragile. When it's your career, you call it stability.

This is not an argument for quitting. Paychecks are excellent fuel. It's an argument against exclusivity.

The old script says: pour every working hour into the one subscriber, then ask them once a year for a 4% price increase. The unlearned version says: keep the subscriber, and quietly open a second line of revenue they don't control.

The first hundred dollars you earn outside your employer changes your psychology more than the next ten thousand inside it. It proves the market will pay you — not your job title.

The move this week: write down one skill your employer already pays for. Then write down one person or business outside your company with that same problem. That pair is your first product. You don't have to sell it yet. Just see it.

One old belief dismantled every week.
